Southeast Asia is seeing a new wave of investment in refining and petrochemical sector with billion-dollar projects being planned and commenced in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Myanmar.

With a combined investment of $50bn, Vietnam is now gaining traction and becoming a host spot in petrochemical market with mammoth projects back on track.

Vietnam’s GDP grew by an aggregate 7.2 percent in the last decade, while nearly 25 percent of the country’s domestic energy consumption comes from oil. Ranked 3rd in proved oil reserve after China and India in the APAC region with 4.4 thousand million barrels, Vietnam still remains a net importer of oil products.

Up to now, there is only one oil refinery in operation in Dung Quat to supply the country’s one third oil products. Vietnam needs to import more than 70 percent of the refined products and petrochemicals it needs. To enhance its oil and gas value and secure the continued economic growth, Vietnam government is now strongly committed to attracting foreign investors to boost up the nation’s downstream capacity, as reflected by billion-dollar refining and petrochemical complexes are being approved and EPC contracts awarded.

Ongoing and planned Refinery and Petrochemical projects in Vietnam include:

  • $29bn PTT Nhon Hoi Refinery and Petrochemical Complex
  • $9bn Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical (NSRP) complex project
  • $4.5bn Long Son petrochemical complex project
  • $4.4-4.8 bn Nam Van Phong Refinery
