Tailings Process Engineer

  • Provide process engineering guidance to support the front end of the project development cycle, including identification of projects, definition of technical requirements, alternative identification and concept selection
  • Provide expert level inputs and reviews to support the FEED/ design engineering of small to large scale tailings projects
  • Lead the Process engineering evaluations and studies for tailings projects
  • Ensure alignment of the tailings plan with the capital projects portfolio
  • Collaborate with a variety of stakeholders/contractors to understand and drive resolution on critical and complex tailings risks
  • Support the Ready for Operations (RFO) and Commissioning & Start Up (C&SU) activities of tailings projects
  • Ensure process designs minimize hazards, achieve the intent, minimize costs, and adhere to both Suncor and relevant industry standards
  • Facilitate effective communication, collaboration and transfer of information within a multi-functional integrated team and to the broader Suncor and project teams
  • Build strong positive relationships while interacting closely with diverse groups of consultants, and internal multi -functional teams/management
  • Update and maintain  site wide water chemistry model
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to junior colleagues and contractors 

Required Qualifications

 

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Seven years of experience in Process Engineering specific to tailings
  • Experience in design  and operation of tailings assets
  • Experience completing  and checking slurry hydraulic calculations 
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/Process or Mineral Processing Engineering
  • Strong proficiency in working independently with outstanding verbal and written communication skills, resilience, customer service attitude and interpersonal relations
  • A continuous improvement mindset and are able to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process and hazards in the workplace
  • Strong collaboration skills that enables you to build strong, positive relationships with diverse groups
  • Alignment with our values

Preference for:

  • Extraction experience
  • Experience in both coarse and fine tailings treatment
  • Proven proficiency in the operation of personal computers such as plant trending / data analysis tools, slurry hydraulic modelling, and typical Microsoft Office programs
  • Demonstrable knowledge in the preparation and effective communication of engineering concepts to drive decisions to technical and management
  • Water chemistry background (modelling / ionic impacts)
  • Understanding of complex processes and strive to develop and implement continuous improvement and creative process enhancements / scope minimization
  • Proven ability to multitask and manage multiple deadlines and priorities

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Occasional travel to Fort Hills and Calgary contractor offices will be required
  • The work schedule is a 40 hour work week (Monday to Friday) with the possibility of short term modification to support project start-up and commissioning activities
