Purpose & accountabilities
Shell aims to provide customers, large and small with clean, affordable and reliable energy solutions. Recognising that solar PV is set to play a major role in the energy system, Shell is building a solar development business.  To do this Shell is developing its own projects and investing in other developer’s projects and development businesses.  The focus is on developing utility-scale solar PV (and storage), for Government, utility and commercial & industrial (C&I) power customers and also behind-the-meter PV (and storage) for C&I customers.
The role sits within the Solar Merger &Acquisition team which is investing in other developer’s projects and investing in and potentially acquiring development businesses and platforms. A number of target countries have been identified with compelling market and commercial drivers, with the potential to provide future scale and appropriate returns and a relevant Shell’s footprint that can be leveraged. 
The Solar Business Development Manager role will lead the evaluation and prioritisation of short-listed markets, and origination and delivery of solar M&A deals from due diligence to deal completion.     
The roles will involve co-ordination of internal and external parties to reach investment decisions, appropriately supported by Shell functions.
  • Deal origination and deal delivery in chosen markets; the role will involve all aspects of origination, deal structuring, negotiation, due diligence through to deal completion;
  • Delivery of a MW deal and pipeline target;
  • Shaping Shell’s solar and storage strategy as the external market evolves, leveraging experience of business development and deal delivery in the solar market;
  • Market and segment prioritization and selection.  As well as understanding the fundamentals of the solar market, this will involve working with local country teams and other teams such as New Energies, gas and power trading to find opportunities where Shell is well-positioned to compete and differentiate with partners and customers;
  • Origination and evaluation of leads for viable and potentially repeatable partnerships, projects and platform investments and acquisitions, establishing relationships with potential counterparties and finding a deal space;
  • Bring an external perspective to challenge and improve Shell’s effectiveness in establishing a solar development platform, bringing best practices and fit-for-purpose frameworks and ways of working; this will involve working with both the business and functions.
