Reporting to the director of business unit project, you will lead the project controls team located in Calgary and Fort McMurray to support Oil Sands and In Situ project development and execution.


  • Provide predictable and competitive project outcomes long term strategy
  • Responsible for overseeing the cost control, estimating, planning and scheduling throughout the full lifecycle of the projects in the portfolio, including capital and expense projects
  • Support the delivery of project controls expertise including baseline cost/schedules, status reporting, variance analysis, forecasting, project execution performance and close-out
  • Provide technical cost and schedule impact guidance and recommendations to different levels of the organization, including senior leadership
  • Understand project risk and able to translate those risks into schedule and quantitative cost impacts
  • Provide a high standard of quality of service by proactive, timely and accurate project analysis and performance
  • Build and maintain peer-to-peer interfaces within the team, business units and functional groups to promote trust and craft collaborative working relationships
  • Develop and mentor direct reports to promote employee retention, and ensure effective execution and bench strength to support continuous growth plans
  • Lead and support the development and implementation of improvement initiatives

Required Qualifications

 
  • 10 or more years of experience in the oil and gas industry, including project controls
  • Five or more years of experience in a leadership role
  • Professional engineering degree considered an asset
  • AACE and PMP accreditation(s) considered an asset
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

  • Deep understanding of project management practices and ability to work in a deadline driven environment
  • Strong aptitude for the development of creative and fit for purposes processes and procedures
  • Strong people management skills, exceptional influencing and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledgeable in all project related standards, procedures and guidelines, including finances and supply chain management
  • Ability to work with a diverse groups of internal and external parties to achieve the best results for the organization
  • Working knowledge of SAP, Primavera, estimating tools (ICARUS), GenSight is considered an

Working Conditions

  • Office environment with frequent travel to Calgary and other Suncor sites
  • Position requires intermittent walk downs in operating plants and construction sites
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory
  • Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible candidates
