The Laboratory Team Leader at the Alliance Refinery in Belle Chasse, LA is responsible for providing safety leadership and implementing processes and tools that enhance the safety culture and environment in the lab. This role reports to the Refinery Business Manager.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Planning, directing and monitoring work activities of all laboratory technicians on a daily basis for both shift and day teams. Performing sample analysis using advanced techniques and equipment to provide general analytical assistance to Operations, Maintenance, Tech Services and Business Analysis regarding refinery products and process flows.

  • Supervising lab chemists and administrative assistant, providing feedback on performance and supports their professional development.

  • Supervising and driving training of Laboratory Technicians on proper laboratory work practices and procedures.

  • Ensuring the timely handling of payroll, vacation, maintenance work orders, requisitions, invoices, etc.

  • Coordinating lab testing and product certifications. Setting testing priority for non-routine samples, small studies and special projects. Able to react and re-prioritize workload quickly due unplanned upsets in process operations

  • Ensuring transportation fuels testing, product release procedures and records required for government are maintained, audited and accurate.

  • Providing oversight for data quality, explanation to customers for results/disputes and coordinate re-testing if necessary.

  • Performing Self-Audits based on Lab Chemist Network Guidelines/Checklist.

  • Performing Laboratory Safety Audits.

  • Serving as the primary Laboratory liaison for Operations. Maintaining good working relationships with internal/external customers including unit operators, optimization engineers, product blenders, etc.

  • Verifying and ensuring laboratory instruments/equipment are properly maintained/repaired to assure business continuity by working closely with Lab Chemists. Able to do minor troubleshooting and/or preventative maintenance on some instruments if necessary.

  • Scheduling manpower and provide material resources in support of QA program alongside QA/QC Chemists.

  • Taking a lead role for LabLynx and other systems related to laboratory testing and results monitoring.

  • Serving as active member of the Phillips 66 Lab/Chemist Network.

  • Maintaining equipment with sufficient stock levels of chemicals, cylinder gases and other supplies and well as safe and correct storage.

  • Maintaining expense budget based on monthly KPI metrics and spend priorities.

  • Continuously monitoring laboratory capability and implements improvement action plans, as needed. Works with vendors and attends conferences to stay abreast of new technology.

  • Developing/implementing policies and guidelines, ensuring conformance/compliance to established company and regulatory requirements. Helping edit SOPs and Quality Documents.

  • Coordinating data testing with outside labs making sure work is complete, data moved to LabLynx and billing charges applied appropriately.

  • Working closely with Lab Admin and Chemists to ensure instrument service contracts are implemented and invoices paid on time.

Required Qualifications

 
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering or related field

  • Advanced proficiency with written and oral communication skills in English

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

  • Working knowledge of Refinery Laboratory Safety and/or Refinery Process Safety

  • Ability to be on call 24/7

Preferred:

  • 1 or more years of supervising people and/or coordinating tasks/projects

  • Experience working within a represented workforce (union) and demonstrated ability to encourage continuous improvement and a drive results-oriented team while maintaining and fostering a positive workplace environment

  • Experience in a petroleum laboratory environment with extensive knowledge of applicable ASTM and EPA mandates/methods/regulations (local and national)

  • Experience with Data Historians (e.g. Honeywell PHD), LabLynx, and SQC Charting

  • Experience operating and troubleshooting some type of analytical instrumentation

  • Experience writing short (1 – 2 page) tech service reports

  • Experience with SAP

  • Demonstrated abilities in collaboration, teamwork, problem solving and conflict resolution

  • Positive energy toward internal lab customers with a professional analytical technical service approach

  • Understand the importance of QA/QC to manufacturing labs

  • Proficient knowledge, of analytical methods and/or data that characterize the properties of petroleum refining process and related streams

  • Basic exposure to product blending, analysis and certification of transportation fuels

The Alliance Refinery is located on the Mississippi River in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, approximately 25 miles southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana. The singletrain facility includes crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, aromatics and delayed coking units. It processes mainly light and medium, low-sulfur crude oil. The refinery receives domestic crude oil through a combination of pipelines, marine transportation and terminals. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, home heating oil and anodegrade petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers in the southeastern and eastern United States through major pipeline systems and by barge. Refined products are exported primarily to Latin America by waterborne cargo.
