The Global Refining - Instructional Design and Learning Specialist is accountable for the design and development of engaging, innovative and effective training for Refining. This includes development of core curriculum for maintenance craft positions (e.g. electrician, instrumentation, mechanical) and field operator and control/console board operator positions. A wide degree of creativity and self-motivation is expected.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Establishing, nurturing, and maintaining collaborative partnerships with HR, Refining training site leads, field operations and maintenance subject matter experts (SMEs), and corporate SMEs

  • Assessing training effectiveness to ensure learning comprehension and behavior change

  • Developing employee skills assessments to identify opportunities for knowledge-based training and mapping training to positions to build core skills and competencies

  • Partnering directly with leadership and SMEs to assess and improve training programs, including:

  • Developing and enhancing knowledge checks and qualification processes to validate strong foundational knowledge and proficiency

  • Developing content strategy, adding high quality training content to library to develop needed skills, and standardizing content as appropriate

  • Using digital and other technologies to improve employee learning and performance

  • Recommending different applications or layouts to improve user learning experience in existing programs

  • Enhancing Console Operator Training fundamentals and developing a Simulator strategy

  • Working with Refining Business Improvement, Learning Operations, and the site leads to assess, improve, and standardize the learning management tools used across the Refineries

  • Working collaboratively with customers to maintain the Refining training standard

  • Planning and delivering projects within defined resources and timeframes and managing several projects at once

Required Qualifications

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 7 or more years of experience working in oil and gas or related industry (Refining preferred)

  • 7 or more years of experience in a learning and development and/or instructional design role

  • Working knowledge of Learning and Development and Learning Management Systems

  • Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

  • Up to 40% travel required (12 Refinery locations)


  • Bachelor’s degree in training and development, or education

  • Open collaborative style; ability to work both in a team environment and autonomously with minimal supervision or direction

  • Understanding of adult learning theory and application

  • Instructional design certification

  • Excellent collaboration and partnering skills within a team environment

  • Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills

  • Excellent inter-personal, facilitation and influencing skills

  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects, deliver on commitments and use sound business judgment

  • Advanced level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
