Reporting to the manager, area operations, you will be responsible for safe, efficient and reliable process operation of the utilities units, including: steam production facilities; boiler feedwater treatment system, reverse osmosis plant, cooling water system, sour water system, instrument and utility air systems and sulphur plants. You will be responsible for ensuring that all operating crews are kept informed of issues that impact equipment performance or availability.


  • Provides guidance and expertise to achieve optimized operation at production targets
  • Establishes maintenance priorities in collaboration with area maintenance coordinator
  • Reviews daily operating instructions, activities and key performance measures at daily area team meeting with emphasis on safe work execution
  • Provides instruction to operating crews, ensuring equipment is ready for maintenance as scheduled
  • Reviews/audits the performance of routine and safety system checks
  • Participates in ongoing review of ISO14001 environmental management system significant aspects and program objectives
  • Coordinates operation activities associated with both planned and unplanned maintenance of utilities units
  • Communicates to production planning and other refinery units any operating issues within the Utilities area which may impact production targets or impact reliability
  • Helps in the development of work scope for utilities unit shutdowns
  • Creates, reviews and updates utilities unit standard operating procedures

Required Qualifications

 
  • Valid First Class Engineer Certificate or Second Class Engineer certificate able to progress to obtain a First Class Engineer Certificate and to obtain a Temporary First Class Engineer Certificate as needed for vacation coverage, per ABSA requirements-  Able to fulfill role of chief operating engineer for the refinery, per ABSA requirements as needed
  • Supervisory experience in a unionized environment (previous refining experience is preferred)
  • Working knowledge of SAP maintenance function
  • High level of technical experience related to refinery processes and equipment, particularly utility systems
  • Able to assess proper business related priorities for maintenance work
  • Understanding and experience with budgeting processes
  • Proficient in use of information management systems
