Are you a highly motivated self-starter who works well within a strong team environment and are you passionate about safety, problem solving, and continuous improvement? Working in our Commerce City refinery that produces 98,000 barrels-per-day and is the only petroleum refinery in the area and one of the largest in the Rocky Mountain region, you will be responsible for providing technical support for the refinery process units as a member of a multi-functional team to promote a safe and environmentally sound facility operation.

  • Optimize unit performance through defining unit constraints, solving performance bottlenecks, identifying energy conservation opportunities, and ¬†communicate this information to the Production Control Group to determine the optimal operating plan
  • Monitor unit mass balances, catalyst activity, heat exchanger performance, unit yields, and performance of advanced control loops to provide recommended modifications to operating procedures and operational guidelines
  • Provide leadership on initiatives that will improve safety performance and environmental compliance by providing process information to the environmental department-related to exceedances, lead and participate in root cause analysis related to exceedances, recommend and implement process changes and projects to prevent repeat environmental events, and develop proactive solutions to environmental issues
  • Participate in and lead process safety management (PSM) activities such as hazard and operability studies, management of change (MOC), pre-start up-safety-review (PSSR), updating process safety information (process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation drawings, and equipment files) and setting, monitoring, and tracking safe operating limits.
  • Participate and lead incident investigations, which include completing root-cause analysis studies
  • Provide technical, troubleshooting, and turnaround support to the cross-functional team which includes operations, maintenance, inspection, process controls, and reliability representatives
  • Review and develop operating procedures, work with operators in implementing procedures, and assist in normal shutdowns, startups, and emergency operations
  • Communicate across Suncor on items such as unit status, constraints and/or potential risks, advise operations on day-to-day activities and train/advise on optimizing operations to maintain environmental compliance and safe operations
  • Mentor and guide less experienced employees as applicable

Required Qualifications

  • One¬†or more years of petroleum refinery or related working experience
  • Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering

  • A deep understanding of refinery operations and maintenance functions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to communicate effectively across all levels of an organization
  • Effective leadership skills which allows you to build teams that generate well-rounded solutions
  • You are a self-starter who can work independently with minimal guidance
  • You oversee the satisfactory resolution of complex technical issues
  • You are able to assess new technologies for applicability to process unit improvements

Working Conditions

  • Stress comes from pressures related to the meeting deadlines and the necessity for safety and environmental compliance
  • Working hours can be long and non-standard during turnarounds, start-ups and upset conditions which may include nights and/or weekends
  • Some work at heights and confined spaces requires PPE, such as a respirator or supplied air/SCBA
