In this temporary role, reporting to the manager, tax compliance, you will govern a broad range of tax responsibilities relating to forecasted tax expense for public guidance, compute various components of Suncor’s financial statement tax provision, deal with complex tax issues, prepare and file tax returns, and assist in Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) audit defense. 


  • Coordinate and manage the tax compliance process for Suncor within designated areas
  • File tax filings and understand and support all material tax positions
  • Accurate and timely computation of Suncor’s tax provision relating to corporate entities
  • Correspond with the CRA and be accountable for responding to financial statement audits
  • Supervise junior staff including work allocation management and the performance review process, as well as provide mentorship to all junior staff within the Corporate Tax department 
  • Coordinate the implementation of the effective and efficient use of tax technology solutions
  • Assist in the implementation of special projects related to tax compliance matters

Required Qualifications

 
  • Minimum of eight years of progressive business experience in a corporate tax environment or equivalent experience
  • Bachelor degree in finance or accounting
  • Completion of the CPA’s in-depth tax courses Levels I & II with completion of Level III, preferred
  • Professional accounting designation preferred

  • Thorough understanding of general legal and business concepts combined with functional skills in TaxPrep ( or equivalent other tax related software) and Microsoft Office
  • A demonstrated capability to navigate the provisions of the Canadian Income Tax Act and solid understanding of IAS 12 and other GAAP measures
  • Team player attitude with demonstrated ability to establish and effectively develop relationships and to partner effectively
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, in formal and informal settings, and across a range of audiences
  • Lead by example when setting performance expectations and standards and values mentorship, continuous learning and career development
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to effectively handle a diverse workload
  • Problem solver utilizing critical thinking, good judgment, and proven ability to make important decisions
  • Adaptable to changing work environments and an inquisitive user of technology solutions

Working Conditions

  • This is a temporary role for a 14-month period
  • Periods of high work volumes and statutory deadlines may require a significant additional time commitment outside of the normal working hours 
  • Some travel may be required to operational sites and to technical tax course/conferences
