Reporting to the director environmental engineering, you will be the corporate technical expert in energy efficiency and air emissions of oil extraction, upgrading, refining processing technologies and fired equipment.

  • Develop methods and models to estimate life cycle carbon intensity of Suncor products (bitumen / synthetic crude oil, fuels and other refined products, renewable fuels and power)
  • Identify opportunities to improve Suncor’s energy & carbon intensity through optimum operational performance and continuous improvement
  • Provide support to energy advisors in energy (fuel / steam / power) and air emissions (GHG / NOx / Sox) measurement/estimation, facility and process performance analysis, pinch-analysis and opportunity identification, engineering & conceptual design as required (e.g. sizing / heat / mass balance)
  • Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency of fired equipment (boilers, OTSGs, HRSGs, gas turbines, furnaces), including; thermal efficiency, fuel efficiency, heat rate, CO2 intensity, CO2 discount for cogens, analyses of the factors affecting the energy efficiency
  • Provide technical support to EHS to meet regulatory compliance and improve long-term performance of fired equipment (CO2, NOx, CO, UHC from fuel oil, SO2/SO3 emissions, acid dew point)
  • Provide technical feedback to capital project teams in design, engineering, equipment selection for optimum energy efficiency and environmental performance
  • Understand and use the best available technology economically achievable (BATEA) analysis as part of technology development and major project decisions.
  • Support technology development in evaluation of new technologies for low intensity electricity, heat, and hydrogen.
  • Increase competency of individuals  within department and across company on energy efficiency and air emissions measurement


Required Qualifications

  • Professional engineer with 15 or more years’ experience in design, engineering, and operation of oil extraction, upgrading, refining processes with focus in energy efficiency and air emissions reduction
  • Hands-on skills and experience in; heat transfer analysis, flue gas / process hydraulics, energy pinch-analysis, process optimization, combustion-generated emissions, stack calculations, and GHG measurement / estimation.
  • Undergraduate degree in chemical, mechanical, or environmental engineering and graduate (masters or PhD) degree with specialization in combustion / energy conversion systems

  • Knowledge and application of thermodynamics, heat transfer, combustion, thermo-chemistry, air emissions measurement and estimation of oil sands extraction, upgrading, and refinery process technologies and fired equipment
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial policy and laws in air emissions measurement and estimation (CO2 / NOx / BLIERs)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical findings at multiple levels of leadership
  • You will need to remain aware of current and future technology, existing and future regulatory changes, operational opportunities and constraints to contribute to world-class performance of operations
  • Able to identify and assess new or modified technologies to address major capex issues or capture opportunities
  • Displays high degree of originality and ingenuity, devises new approaches, applies or develops criteria, and draws conclusions from comparative situations

Working Conditions

  • Business travel to various Suncor sites as required
