Reporting to the lead, control systems Firebag, you will work within the Firebag automation team and provide technical support to operation, maintenance and other partners. You will apply our policies and standards, values, and operational discipline behaviors in the execution of your work.

  • Program, fix and maintain existing process control systems(Emerson Delta V DCS/SIS and Triconex/Trident SIS)
  • Maintain control system infrastructure including system administration, cyber security, hot fixes, patches, virus definition updates, back-ups, etc.
  • Alarm and interlock bypass management
  • Support commissioning and start-up project related activities
  • Ensure timely resolution of technical issues, and technical support requests
  • Apply continuous improvement techniques to improve and optimize control systems reliability and performance
  • Build and support automation standards and guidelines

Required Qualifications

  • Eight or more years of industrial experience in process control systems and system infrastructure (network) maintenance, preferably in an operating plant and/or SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) environment
  • Working experience with Emerson Delta V and plant network communication systems including configuration, troubleshooting and maintaining the systems
  • Experience in installing and servicing communications between various control systems using industrial communication protocols like OPC and Modbus
  • Hands-on experience with safety systems such as Triconex and Delta V SIS
  • Bachelor degree or a diploma in a related engineering discipline; Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or as a Professional Technologist with the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET)
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

  • Skilled in configuration and troubleshooting of Emerson Delta V DCS software and control system hardware including networks, switches, fiber back-bone
  • Deep understanding of digital buses and communication protocols including Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Modbus, TCP/IP, Ether Net/IP, Device Net, OPC, etc.
  • Deep understanding of regulatory and discrete controls, including motor controls, variable frequency drives, safety instrumented systems, field sensors, final control elements, etc.
  • Knowledgeable in the preparation and review of process controls project deliverables, such as control narratives, logic diagrams, cause and effect diagrams, loop wiring diagrams, etc.
  • Familiar with networks, switches, fiber back-bone and other control system infrastructures, including process control network security
  • Dedicated to safety; constantly asking what could go wrong and learn to anticipate potential problems

Working Conditions

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive
  • This is a camp-based position at our Firebag in-situ operation
  • The shift schedule is a seven days on/seven days off rotation (12 hour day shift)
