Are you passionate about developing and implementing asset performance management (APM) and optimization for gas turbine (GT) and cogeneration assets across Suncor? Acting as the subject matter expert (SME) and reporting to the manager, APM, you will focus on validating and prioritizing system and equipment abnormalities, conducting performance analysis and investigation, managing cases and determining appropriate actions, and providing input into the GT and cogen equipment maintenance and performance optimization strategy.

  • Lead the design, build, validation, implementation and tuning of analytical models to monitor Suncor’s cogen fleet
  • Receive alerts on cogen system and equipment abnormalities; validate and prioritize alerts, and monitor assets to support condition based maintenance and optimization
  • Liaise with regional development, commercial services, major projects, and asset cross-functional teams (ACFT’s) to understand business drivers for cogen performance, regulatory, and strategy optimization
  • Collaborate with SME’s, including original equipment manufacturer (OEM), vendors, and ACFT’s
  • Build business cases for areas of improvement and opportunity including: cogen model creation and sustainment, policies, and institutionalizing the knowledge from completed cases
  • Drive APM workflow for individual cases and ensure all information is gathered and documented; manage APM governance
  • Capture and contribute value and key performance indicators for reporting to leadership
  • Provide technical direction into APM strategy development for new gas turbine and cogen initiatives, including input into equipment strategies for model blueprints, failure mode detection, instrumentation and XHQ  dashboards
  • Perform root cause investigations for complex equipment issues: provide system or equipment performance testing, support capital project management and recommend appropriate and cost effective solutions to correct problems and improve efficiency

Required Qualifications

  • 10 or more years of relevant experience in the cogeneration or utility industry
  • Five years of experience directly supporting industrial frame gas turbine maintenance, including OEM and vendor contract management, outage planning and execution
  • Exposure to oil and gas or a similar industry; hands on experience in an operating environment is preferred
  • Undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, applied science or equivalent
  • Registered as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) is preferred

  • Strong knowledge of gas turbine and cogen performance profiles and operating modes, GT control systems (i.e. Mark VI, ABB), degradation and fatigue mechanisms, performance testing and verification, and lifecycle optimization
  • Strong technical knowledge in GT and rotating machinery principles, including root cause analysis (RCA) investigation, vibration analysis, condition and performance monitoring and testing, maintenance and repair scopes, and development and execution
  • You are highly motivated self-starter with strong data analytic and mathematical skills
  • Ability to apply mature engineering knowledge to solve problems independently and collaborate with others in order to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written and the ability to build good working relationships

Working Conditions

  • Potential for extended work hours on occasion based on business needs
  • Some travel to operating sites in the Wood Buffalo region will be required
