The Senior Rotating Equipment Engineer will provide consultation and Rotating Equipment technical expertise. Primary focus is Phillips 66 Refining facilities. This position will primarily focus on condition monitoring and equipment analytics program development and support. Current programs include Machine Health Monitoring (Machinery Analytics), System 1 Classic to System 1 Evolution upgrade, wireless condition monitoring development and implementation. This position will also provide support for Major Capital Projects equipment selection and inspection.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Providing technical support to solve Rotating Equipment problems by working closely with refinery maintenance, inspection, reliability, operations, & process personnel including:

  • Providing technical expertise for Root Cause Analysis of unique rotating equipment problems.

  • Developing corporate solutions for common failures and threats, based on cause and effect analyses.

  • Identifying problems and recommending appropriate measures to control, manage, and correct the issues.

  • Providing consulting and guidance on equipment condition monitoring and machinery protection. Assisting with development and implementation of new condition monitoring hardware and software.

  • Understanding process operating parameters which impact the Rotating Equipment ability to maintain superior performance and minimize loss of containment (LOC) potential.

  • Providing technical oversight of unique repair and/or modifications in the field or at vendor shops, including liaison with vendor and contractor personnel.

  • Supervising, and/or performing field and shop testing as required.

  • Providing technical consulting during the capital project FEL process regarding new and/or revamping projects to provide input for any Rotating Equipment issues.

  • Providing technical assistance for refinery turnarounds when requested.

  • Conducting rotating equipment scope reviews for major turnarounds.

  • Keeping abreast of new developments in the areas of applicable codes affecting Rotating Equipment in order to address problems using the latest technology available.

  • Participating in the activities of refining industry technical societies and other organizations in order to leverage industry knowledge and experience.

  • Supporting development and oversight of vendor alliances related to Rotating Equipment.

  • Actively supporting Rotating Equipment excellence including:

  • Maintaining and developing rotating equipment Refining Engineering Practices, Recommended Best Practices, and Guidelines. Support the implementation of Rotating Equipment best practices for operating facilities so that continuous improvement can be accomplished corporate-wide in design, operation, and maintenance of equipment.

  • Reporting and monitoring rotating equipment KPI’s.

  • Recommending and developing plans how to improve rotating equipment safety, reliability, and cost.

  • Managing content on the Network Knowledge Sharing site.

  • Monitoring network activity for strategic issues and improvement needs.

  • Leading sub-networks and task groups as needed to accomplish network and refining goals.

Required Qualifications

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelors or advanced degree in Engineering

  • 7 or more years of relevant work experience

  • 3 or more years of experience in design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, vibration analysis, and materials of construction associated with Rotating Equipment

  • 3 or more years of experience in rotating equipment condition monitoring, including Bently Nevada System 1

  • Working knowledge of reliability fundamentals and principles

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

  • Proficiency in SAP PM

  • Job requires average of 25% travel


  • Bachelors or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • 10 or more years of relevant work experience

  • Vibration Level II or higher certification. Demonstrated rotordynamic analysis capability.

  • Experience with rotating equipment (compressors, turbines, pumps) factory acceptance (performance) testing

  • Experience and understanding of the API rotating equipment codes and the application of these requirements

  • Fundamental understanding of Asset Performance Management (APM/Meridium) Software

  • Strong customer/business focus

  • Ability/desire to share best practices across the organization

  • Self-starting/managing

  • Mentor less experienced engineers

  • Strong networking/team building and interpersonal skills

  • Solid communication skills - oral and written
