Reporting to the manager, regulatory and environment projects, you will ensure all regulatory and environmental issues on the Meadow Creek project are identified, interpreted, translated, and communicated so that the development is executed in a manner that is compliant with all laws and regulations.

  • Ensure the business unit identifies all compliance obligations from all regulatory bodies and stewards the ownership
  • Identify, interpret, and translate regulatory legislation, governance, application, approvals and other relevant guidance documents of regulatory agencies in Alberta as well as other provincial jurisdictions 
  • Integrate regulatory requirements into project development process and tools (PMOC  process, risk process, project controls processes)
  • Influence the regulatory strategy and tactics to achieve goals within the project environment as well as indirectly influence into business unit decisions on how to (or whether to) proceed with amendments or new approvals
  • Provide regulatory direction in engineering development process and construction activities, and understand the implications of decisions on both and identify solutions to minimize impact
  • Direct inspections, investigations and tours by regulators and internal leaders

Required Qualifications

  • At least five years of prior, relevant environmental health and safety (EHS) and/or regulatory experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering or equivalent education
  • Related professional designation is an asset

  • Dynamic and broad-based understanding of regulatory and environmental implications of aspects of the oil and gas project development (air emissions, water releases, land instruments, process requirements, wildlife management, permitting), and technical developments within the project (water treatment plants, pipelines, cogeneration units, drilling)
  • Comprehension of engineering technical issues, combined with the ability to speak to potential solutions intelligently, employing non-standard thinking and innovative solutions
  • Dedicated, possessing excellent skills in project development, relationship building and management, particularly with regulators and government
  • You are organized and capable of handling changing priorities, handling confidential information with a high level of integrity and work under pressure
  • Strong communication (both written and verbal), influencing and customer service skills to all levels in the organization

Working Conditions

  • The position will be based in Calgary at the Suncor Energy Centre
  • Travel to and from project sites may be required on a regular basis
