The Refinery Economist is part of the site’s Economics & Scheduling team. The team has the primary responsibility of providing the right economic steers for the optimization of the hydrocarbon production of the site, based on accurate, fit-for-purpose planning and scheduling models. Our goal is to deliver the right product to the right place on time and maximize the integrated margin for the site and across the different lines of businesses.

What’s the role?

The Refinery Economist is responsible for understanding and providing economic direction to the refinery with focus on the current month optimization, working closely with other economists and schedulers on site. This role also supports growing the margin capability of the site, through economic and yield studies as well as site wide economic communication. The position works closely the wider process engineering, process control and production teams on site to help push constraints and identify opportunities to improve site economics.
Economist roles are intended to have rotational responsibilities assigned based upon competency and overall resource mix to cover E&S activities to allow for both learning & development as well as deliver superior business results. The scope of these shared responsibilities typically ranges from commercial hydrocarbon optimization economist (Dark oils/Light Oils product coordinators), refinery planning economist, and the margin performance economist.

Accountabilities:
  • Supports delivery of the optimal monthly operating plans and implements the day-to-day optimization of the site in close operation with the scheduling team.
    • Provides weekly margin steers to the refinery including values of key constraints and cut points
    • Supports analysis on feedstock and product economics including cargo economics, product quality optimization, opportunity feedstock evaluations, and overall hydrocarbon margin optimization efforts for the E&S team.
    • Provides input to the site process control group for on-line Optimizer economics as needed w/changes in market pricing
    • Monitors market product pricing, key market indicators (such as inventories), and regional competitor operating constraints.
    • Provides forward view around feedstock & product markets for longer term refinery economic decision making
    • Assists the Crude Economist in delivering the monthly operating plan.
  • Grow margin
    • Monitors site performance against agreed plans, and derives direction for opportunity identification
    • Explores & conducts business development opportunities locally for margin growth projects
    • Partners with supply chain partners to develop & support E2E margin projects
  • Margin Appraisal
    • Supports the Margin Variance Analysis (MVA) monthly process
    • Performs analysis by comparing business /operating plans to actual performance.
    • Communicates insights and supports the refinery in understanding lost business opportunities
    • Identifies and supports the implementation of improvement opportunities, including specific incident tracking

Required Qualifications

 
What we need from you -
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Bachelor's Degree is required; MBA is a plus.
  • Minimum five (5) years in Refining or Chemicals industry
  • Prior experience in Manufacturing (Technology) or Economics & Supply is essential.
  • Understanding of Linear Programming-technique/usage in a refinery/supply chain environment.
  • Knowledge of supply chain economics and refining processes.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills combined with analytical ability and attention to details are essential to manage multiple working interfaces at various levels.
  • Ability to provide clear communication on economic direction whilst considering the feasibility aspects too.
The individual should be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in an ever-changing and fast paced environment. In order to drive Optimization across organizational boundaries this role requires effective engagement with a wide range of refinery and Trading & Supply stakeholders.

As the E&S department assists the operations department, coverage 24/7 is required and weekend/night coverage is required, but rotated amongst the team.
