Do you enjoy taking initiative and using your analytical skills to drive improvements and assess new technology within your field? Working closely with the manager, reliability transmission and distribution (T&D), you will support the reliability engineering team on the initiatives related to maintenance and improvements for protection system associated with high voltage electrical equipment in the T&D jurisdiction at our base plant and in-situ Firebag sites.

  • Drive compliance to all relevant Suncor policies and standards including the management of change process and maintenance processes
  • Assist with technical issues for improvements, design reviews and specifications, troubleshooting or failure analysis related to protection relays and systems
  • Assess protection isolation procedures to allow safe execution of maintenance protection work without disturbing in-service system
  • Develop scopes of work as it relates to protection relays and systems maintenance/improvements as part of the planning process for special outages, turnarounds and annual event calendar
  • Assess protection relays and system testing results during preventive maintenance activities
  • Support the follow-up of the protection system preventive maintenance execution and propose applicable optimization/improvements
  • Perform root cause analysis related to failure events associated with protection systems and define applicable corrective /mitigation measures
  • Support our reliability improvement plan and processes and reinforce a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration
  • Drive a structured approach to uphold all health, safety and environment standards, and ensure effective actions and programs are in place to sustain safety and reliability performance goals

Required Qualifications

  • Four to six years of related experience working in reliability and maintenance of protection relays and systems
  • Experience with the development of predictive and preventative maintenance strategies for protection systems
  • Bachelor degree in electrical engineering with a focus on protection relays and systems
  • Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record
