The Production Leader - Quality Assurance supervises personnel on the team and coordinates Control Lab testing and product certification. The Production Leader - Quality Assurance is the liaison between the Lab and Refinery Operations.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Safe Laboratory work practices and complying with Company Rules of Conduct.

  • Ensuring incidents are documented in Impact; taking necessary corrective action on safety issues and incidents.

  • Resource management of laboratory personnel, which includes following the process of calling out personnel for voluntary or mandatory filling of the Shift Schedule during unexpected vacancies.

  • Management of all laboratory work orders, which includes entering work orders into the system and following up until the work order is complete.

  • Making work schedule changes to ensure appropriate testing is covered. This may include moving Technicians from a less busy job to help out with a job that is temporarily overwhelmed with work.

  • Maintaining good working relationship with internal and external customers. Internal customers include Unit Operators, Optimization Engineers, Controls Engineers, Product Blenders and Pipeline Operators. External customers include third-party pipeline inspectors, Terminal Operators, Pipeline Operators and Government Inspectors.

  • Maintaining quality and reliability of data reporting by ensuring QA/QC samples are performed and discrepancies are addressed, corrected or reported to the chemists or Lab Management.

  • Ensuring finished products are tested accurately and timely in support of pipeline tender schedules.

  • Prioritizing work for Instrument Technician.

  • Monitoring and coordinating Chemist projects and duties as applicable with the refinery operations.

  • Ordering laboratory supplies and consumables.

  • Logging-in non-routine scheduled samples and print tags. Performing analytical tests in Shift Lead backlog and Sulfur backlog on the off shift.

  • Maintaining Shift Lead Log Sheets.

  • Reviewing Specification Out of Limit emails and keeping the Product Off Spec Log updated. Calculating all Tank Doctors for Off-Spec Products and communicating to the OM Logistics Operator. Communicating Finished Product Tank Quality to Oil Movements and Pipeline.

  • Communicating sampling/testing priority needs to appropriate lab personnel including weekend duty chemist and refinery operations.

  • Resolving lab personnel conflicts.

  • Assisting in training and development of Control Lab personnel.

  • Ensuring the Lab staff is cross functional with minimum staffing.

  • Conduct quarterly Chemical Hygiene Team meeting.

  • Meet overall expense budget by category, as well as projects, while driving efficiencies in the lab.

  • Implement and maintain Our Energy in Action plan across Quality Assurance Department.

Required Qualifications

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • High school degree or GED equivalent

  • 5 or more years of laboratory analysis experience

  • Valid driver’s license


  • 5 or more years of direct refining experience with emphasis on product blending and certification

  • Previous Supervisory experience

  • Ability to create a team atmosphere

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, verbal and written

  • Proficient computer skills with experience using Lablynx or other Lab Information Management Systems, SAP, and EDMS software

  • Proficient in Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills

  • Ability to handle stress in the workplace, to be constructive in conflict situations and to handle feedback and constructive criticism in a professional manner

  • Leader who leads by example, motivates others and encourages initiative

  • Instills confidence and promotes spirit of cooperation in the lab and between lab and customers

  • Leader who can handle multiple issues of safety, production, and training while ensuring quality of product analysis

The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
