Reporting to the maintenance shift supervisor, you will perform safe and efficient preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance of our substations assets (>13.8kV) and auxiliary equipment.


  • Execute maintenance activities such as installation, troubleshoot and repair of all high voltage systems and equipment to ensure optimum reliability and availability while minimizing the impact on our operations and incurred costs
  • Collaborate and coordinate work with other departments such as operations, reliability, protection, automation and power line technicians to aid in restoring our assets back to operational state
  • Support planning, scheduling and field monitoring of all maintenance activities on the area assets
  • Initiate detailed work notifications and requests for follow up work
  • Prepare and submit regular feedback on work orders as a result of maintenance activities in an effort to improve our maintenance plans, records and tasks lists
  • Perform corrective repair work and testing of transformers, switchgears, cables terminations, circuit breakers, potential and current transformers, and direct current (DC) systems
  • Actively participate in post event failure analysis and root cause discussions, make recommendations to develope plans and creative solutions
  • Perform substation maintenance inspections on all items within the substation fence such as transformers, breakers, switches, relays, batteries, chargers, current transformers and potential transformers, ground grid, control wiring and fencing
  • Review and apply continuous improvement input as it pertains to work practices, procedures, check sheets and standards
  • Review and mark-up relevant drawings after equipment installation or corrective work are completed

Required Qualifications

 
  • Five or more years of experience in maintenance and/or commissioning of high voltage electrical utilities substation equipment
  • Valid Alberta Journeyman Power System Electrician Certificate or an Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Power System Electrician Certificate; attach your Journeyman / Red Seal ticket with your application in order to be considered
  • Powerline Technician or Engineering Technologist certification is an asset
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record  

  • Proven knowledge of maintenance of high voltage substation equipment with extensive testing knowledge of cable, bus bar, CTs, transformers, neutral grounding resistance, surge arrestors, insulators, DC systems and potential transformers
  • Solid knowledge and understanding to interpret protection and control drawings, single line diagrams for the purpose of testing substation equipment
  • Deep understanding of grounding to attain safe isolation of electrical equipment for troubleshooting purposes
  • Adaptive work style with an ability to handle multiple priorities, challenging demands and function in a positive but dynamic work environment
  • You are a highly motivated self-starter with the ability to make decisions with integrity and support company objectives and policies
  • You do not take or tolerate shortcuts and if the procedure is incorrect, you fix it

Working Conditions

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive as well as security sensitive. Successful candidates must clear a criminal history check
  • The shift schedule is a four days on/three days off rotation; 10 hour shifts
  • You will be required to perform some heavy lifting, use of ladders and working on elevated work sites such as scaffolds and towers and perform in a variety of different environments both indoor and outdoor
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory
  • Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible applicants
