Operators are responsible for performing routine and special operations to keep production processes ongoing and safe in the Roxana, Illinois Plant. Duties include but are not limited to; sedentary and mobile surveillance of unit operations, working in confined space or maneuvering in tight spaces for work tasks, observing gauges and instrument readings, climbing, turning valves, lubrication, minor maintenance of equipment, preparing and coordinating work areas for maintenance activities and, if assigned, being a member of the plant fire crew. Operators most commonly work in crews under the supervision of the Front-Line Supervisor. Operators follow a rotating 12-hour shift schedule and infrequently may be required to work up to 18 hours in a shift.

Applicants must take and pass a series of basic apptitude tests to verify qualification.

Physical demands include but are not limited to: lifting and carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, walking, opening and closing valves, prolonged sitting and use of small and large hand tools. Operators must be able to work in indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions as well as in confined spaces and at high levels of elevation. Operators are required to pass a physical and a job-related agility test.

There are plant turnarounds that require intensified work and extended hours for crews to upgrade and repair plant systems and to monitor and coordinate work with turnaround personnel. Turnarounds can occur an average of every 18 months and can last as long as 5-6 weeks.

Operators are required to undergo training and may be assigned to the Emergency Response Team as First Responders.

Employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) within the plant and be clean shaven at all times. PPE includes but is not limited to fire retardant clothing, hearing protection, safety glasses with side shields, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), splash goggles and Phillips 66 approved safety shoes/boots.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Monitor unit operations

  • Turn valves

  • Take gauge and instrument readings

  • Lubricate and perform minor maintenance of equipment

  • Make necessary changes to ensure product is manufactured on specification

  • Following safety & technical procedures and maintaining environmental awareness

  • Learn and use computer software associated with process operations


  • Respond to safety and environmental incidents, should they occur, in a safe and efficient manner

  • Willing and able to serve on Emergency Response Team, including firefighting duties

Required Qualifications

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • At least 18 years of age

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

  • Possess a valid driver's license

  • Willing to work 12-hr. rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime

  • Willing and able to work outside year-round in all weather conditions

  • Able to climb up to 355 feet within caged ladders

  • Must be willing and able to read technical procedures and materials in English

  • Must be willing and able to work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat

  • Must be willing and able to maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

  • Must be willing and able to wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment including but not limited to items such as protective toe footwear, ear and eye protection, head protection, gas monitor, and hand protection

  • Able to lift minimum of 60 lbs.

  • Willing and able to serve on Emergency Response Team

  • Must be willing and able to work in enclosed spaces such as tanks and silos

  • Must be willing and able to work near large, hot, high speed machines

  • Must be willing and able to work around chemicals, including acids and bases


  • Associate degree in process technology

The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
