Shell Global Commercial Business (GC) is one of the important parts of Shell Downstream Businesses, which includes Lubricants, Aviation, Bitumen, etc.
The Global Commercial Technology (GCT) organization is a key enabler for the GC business growth through delivering product differentiation, continuous innovation, new technical service offerings and operational excellence. There are three technology labs of GC Technology worldwide located in Germany, USA, and China. Those labs work closely together to drive and deliver value to the GC business.  

We are currently looking for an Operations Manager to join our team in Hamburg as part of our Global Operations Leadership Team.

What is the role about?
The role of Operations Manager is a newly created role in the Shell Technology Centre Hamburg (STCHA) to respond to the latest Shell Technology Strategy which led to the building of a Global Operations Organization for GCT.
The role is responsible for hands-on leadership and the operational excellence in the management of the GC Lubricants Operations Team in Hamburg, which comprises of the teams for Oil/Grease Blending, lubricants products testing, and equipment parts lubrication testing that includes transmission components and high-tech friction tests.

The Operations Manager will pro-actively drive operational excellence, high quality and safety standards, customer satisfaction and Technology Leadership with the operations teams to support and deliver global technology Research and Development (R&D) programs. The role will work closely and collaboratively with its counterparts in Houston, US and in Shanghai, China and will be part of the global extended Leadership-Team.
A significant task of the role will be to drive the change management to support the successful building of the Global Operations Organization and to establish new ways of working with a one team - multiple locations culture. He/she reports to General Manager, Global Operations in GC Technology, located in Houston.

Key accountabilities in this role are:
1. accountable for motivating, coaching, and developing operations staff and lab technicians for competency improvement and career advancement
2. responsible for efficient and effective delivery of the lab support needs to global R&D and technical services programs by understanding the business priorities and leveraging people and lab assets in STCHA as well as the other Shell labs and external labs.
3. accountable for delivery of HSSE (Health, Safety, Security and Environment) Goal Zero and Shell Quality Standards and Shell polices for the operations team in Hamburg.
4. responsible for managing Capex and Opex in STCHA operations community and implementing Global Operations strategy with support of General Manager, Global Operations, in GC Technology.
5. responsible for driving positive behaviors in work ethics, HSSE, and continuous improvement by being a role model and a visible leader for the Operations Community
6. strong leadership and change management to establish smooth ways of working between Lab Technicians and Project Leads and close collaboration between the three lab sites across the globe
7. accountable for managing relationship with internal and external business stakeholders, demonstrating visible value of the operations to the customers.

In addition to managing the operations community in Hamburg lab, this role will have opportunities to interact with the counterparts in US and in China to deliver overall Operations Excellence for Global Commercial Technology. The person needs to be involved in promoting Shell technology leadership and supporting customer/OEMs’ visits and events. That requires the role to build strong commercial mindset for him/her and the entire operations team.
Due to the global perspective, there would be international travels for the job (2-3 times/year).

The Operations Manager will be a Leader of Community with 50 staff, having 4 direct reports of Team Leads. He/She will be responsible for the Capex investments of the Operational Community / Teams in STCHA and accountable for value delivery against the budget allocated.
