Junior Engineer, High Voltage Electrical

Reporting to the manager, transmission & distribution System (T&DS) reliability engineering, the successful candidate will be responsible for applying high voltage (HV) power system engineering principles, utility standards/practices, and power system analysis skills in support of the Suncor power T&DS.


  • Assist with reviewing and analyzing T&DS designs from 13.8kV up to 260 kV.
  • Prepare electrical equipment, system operation, and maintenance related documentation including SLDs, scopes of work, engineering reports, test plans, risk reviews, ILP investigations, PM plans, Isolation procedures, etc. 
  • Support the technical evaluation/review of T&DS Projects. Identify steady state and/or dynamic deficiencies through analysis and operational studies to ensure reliable and secure integration and operation of our high voltage (HV) electrical system.
  • Participate in asset walkdowns, and QA/QC inspections of field installations according to applicable Industry/Suncor codes and standards.
  • Conduct conventional power system analysis using ETAP, PSSE and other analysis software. Evaluate analysis results and prepare written report of findings, recommendations, and improvement opportunities.
  • Perform outage studies and contingency analysis for planned outages and coordinate with stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

 
  • Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from a recognized university. Advanced degree specializing in power systems is an asset.
  • Registered with APEGGA as engineer-in-training (E.I.T.) / P.Eng
  • Related utility experience is an asset.
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record.

  • Knowledge and experience with CSA/IEEE/IEC/ANSI standards for HV electrical systems.
  • Understanding of power operations and control including steady state and dynamic behavior of power systems.
  • Good knowledge of power system analytical techniques and modeling.
  • Superior interpersonal skills with strong oral and written communication capability.
  • Demonstrated leadership, team building, communications, interpersonal, conflict management, time management , and problem solving skills.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office Suite, drafting software (i.e. AutoCAD), and Engineering software (i.e. ETAP & PSSE).
  • You are a highly motivated self-starter with creative problem solving skills and the ability to work in a high-pressure technical environment.

Working Conditions

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive.
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km is mandatory.
