The crude oil Operations Inventory Analyst is a key team member with the Schedulers, Traders, and Settlement Analysts in acquiring oil for: a) supplying refineries and b) selling to 3rd parties for profit. 
The Inventory Analyst is responsible for the recording and tracking of the physical movement of crude from the point of origin to its final destination as a sale to the refinery or trade for profit. Collectively, the team is responsible for all inventory locations and various grades in the scope of STCAN’s (Shell Trading Canada) crude trading business. Duties include confirming and reconciling volumes, resolving any volumetric discrepancies with counter parties, as well as other trade book cost validations.
Beyond these key deliverables, the Inventory Analyst is expected to “own the molecule” and understand the operations and commercial implications behind the data.  The Inventory Analyst plays a critical role in the Crude Trading Operations organization and is expected to manage losses, prevent profit leakage, and analyze / report on all aspects of crude movements within our remit.
There is a key element of data management in consolidating statements and updating the trade book to reflect trued up (actualized) transactions and manage the changes and transfers throughout. Considering the scale of the business, the role requires technical competency along with a very numerate and detail oriented work ethic.
Some of the key responsibilities are described below:

  • Verifying and recording all trade purchases and sales per month
  • Accounting for moves at all locations through Shell Pipe Line Company, various 3rd party pipelines, railcars, trucks and barges
  • Recording and accounting for refinery sales, memo sales, lease activity, and proprietary pipeline activity
  • Accounting for all regrades and transfers of crude
  • Reporting to Operations on the inventory position, which is used in the planning of future moves
  • Assisting the financial closing team in the review of significant differences between forecasted and actual volume
  • Reconciliation of STCAN’s inventory balances to third party statements
  • Resolving volumetric discrepancies related to crude oil movements
  • Identifying root cause of problems and taking proper action to resolve them
  • Scheduling meetings with internal stakeholders, Shell Pipe Line, or 3rd party companies to resolve inventory discrepancies
  • Recording, reconciling, and invoicing refineries for crude supply in a timely manner
  • Ensuring compliance and embedding of key non-SOX controls
  • Work with Commercial Operations group to identify / implement commercial opportunities
