The Instrument Reliability Team Leader provides technical support for routine maintenance of the refinery's instrumentation assets while leading reliability improvements in instrumentation and controls. This position reports to the Automation Team Leader and has direct reports including engineers and specialists. This position requires strong leadership, a proven problem solver and strong equipment ownership.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Participating and promoting all aspects of refinery safety programs.

  • Visibly demonstrating commitment to the workplace safety and health of employees and contractors through personal engagement and sound decisions.

  • Providing routine maintenance engineering and troubleshooting support for instrumentation asset base composed of field measurement sensors, transmitters, analyzers, and control valves.

  • Maintaining and stewarding the instrument bad actor lists.

  • Maintaining, managing and analyzing system to capture appropriate equipment data, equipment records & repair histories, standards updates, and technical bulletins.

  • Supporting the design and implementation of solutions for reliability improvements, process improvements and bad actor elimination.

  • Performing Criticality Analysis and maintains the criticality ranking for instrumentation.

  • Creating and evaluating preventive maintenance plans, procedures, and training programs.

  • Evaluating and recommending improvements to spares parts inventory.

  • Recommending material and equipment upgrades or changes as warranted.

  • Identifying equipment problems and recommending appropriate measures to control, manage and correct issues.

  • Designing and recommending new equipment solutions where justified.

  • Leading and/or participating on incident teams to investigating significant reliability and/or safety related events associated with instrumentation failures.

  • Participating in knowledge share with other sites within the company by serving as the site's core member in the instrumentation networks.

  • Effectively communicating and engaging with other functional groups at all levels from craft persons and operators to refinery leadership.

  • Participating in Process Hazards Analyses for refinery process units.

  • Initiating and evaluating management of changes (MOC).

Required Qualifications

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • 10 or more years of instrumentation experience within a process industrial environment

  • Intermediate level proficiency with ISA codes and standards

  • Intermediate level proficiency with API codes and standards

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office products

  • Ability and willingness to perform/comply, with or without a reasonable accommodation, with the following:

o Ability to climb, stand, crawl, in confined space entry

o Ability to maneuver through process areas containing pumps, towers, compressors, piping systems, etc.

o Ability to wear refinery required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

o Ability to work extended shifts and respond to after-hours call outs

o Ability to work in outside weather conditions including cold and heat

o Clean shaven daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly

  • Must maintain a Valid Driver’s License


  • Proven strong leadership skills

  • Professional Engineering License

  • Intermediate level of working knowledge with IEC

  • Maintenance experience with instrument systems and analyzers

  • Ability to interpret SIL calculations

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills

  • Accepts ownership, is accountable and delivers on commitments

  • Strong technical knowledge and ability to apply practical solutions in the field

The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units, as well as an NGL fractionation facility. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally, and heavy sour crude oil produced in Canada, all of which are delivered by pipeline. Borger produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGLs and solvents. Refined products are distributed to customers via pipelines from the refinery to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
