To improve the safety, reliability and operational performance of heat transfer equipment for the Shell Convent Refinery with ~20% support to the Shell Geismar Chemical plant.  To coach and develop the technical and operational staff regarding heat transfer discipline competencies.  Primary focus is on Fired Equipment (i.e fired heaters, boilers, Thermal reactors, flares). The Geismar facility is approximately a 15 minute drive from the Convent Refinery.
 
  • Implement key Heat Transfer Best Practices (BPs), in particular, the Heater Consistent Firing Practice document, Heater Tube Metal Temperature Best Practice, Combustion Control BP, develop and maintain robust proactive monitoring variables and associated operator action tables, and assist in the advancing proactive technical monitoring.
  • Support the ability of units to meet site annual HSE targets
  • Mentor/develop heat transfer competencies of site staff, unit performance specialists, unit process engineers, and pressure equipment engineers and inspectors.
  • Provide technical support to operations activities related to furnaces, as needed.
  • Provides furnace related training to support teams and new hires.
  • Monitoring of heater performance and escalation of issues to Process Engineering, Operations or other support teams.
  • Supports energy efficiency activities related to the process furnaces.
  • Provide furnace expertise, as needed, to individuals participating in audits to maintain compliance with state & federal requirements, as well as local and corporate standards (including Heater/Boiler MACT).
  • Work to fully imbed and implement a robust and sustainable heater and flares program.
  • Technical Assurance of MOC and plant projects that affect heat transfer equipment.
  • Identify long term threats to business plan delivery from furnace issues and associated risk assessment to support Capital Projects and/or Turnaround work scope.
  • Assist turnaround and other major maintenance planning and execution of heat transfer equipment.
  • Provide expert advice on the design, selection, construction, commissioning and start-up of heat transfer equipment.
  • Provide expert advice on maintenance and operational issues, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis of fired equipment.
  • Develop and support new heat transfer equipment technologies and identify and facilitate application and deployment.
  • Maintain relationships with corporate / regional company specialists and contribute to the overall corporate heat transfer discipline/networks.   Is a member of these networks.
  • Comply with corporate standards and work processes.
  • Support / complete Heater and Boiler MACT requirements on the run and for equipment outages (including T/As).
  • Drive Enterprise First behaviors with regard to Leadership, Accountability and Teamwork.
This position is designed to directly impact the integrity and performance of heat transfer equipment at the aforementioned sites. Heat transfer equipment in this case include both fired and unfired equipment but with a heavy fired equipment focus.

Key challenges:
 
  • Overcoming long-established practices and culture that may be counter to the best practices described above and champion the implementation of new technologies, operations and work processes for furnaces related issues.
  • High business demand.
  • Multiple sites (2), many people involved, will require high energy and networking skills.
  • Managing competing priorities as both Convent and Geismar Fired Equipment Technical support. The time commitment is meant to be 20% for Geismar and 80% for Convent.
  • Staying up to date on furnace technologies and operating best practices
