Are you an experienced tax professional looking for an incredible opportunity to join our tax team as the director of tax accounting? Reporting directly to the vice-president, tax, you will be accountable for all tax aspects of Suncor’s external financial reporting and internal forecasting of results. You will serve as a leader within the tax function and interface frequently with Suncor's broader Finance department as well as with our external auditors.


  • Lead and mentor professional staff, embodying an advanced leadership presence and contributing positively to a high performing and collegial corporate culture
  • Govern the quarterly review and annual computation of our consolidated tax provision and related disclosure, and all tax elements of our internal budgeting processes and external corporate guidance
  • Represent Suncor with regard to tax items arising during the financial statement audit process
  • Investigate and manage the continued improvement of Suncor’s tax reporting processes and systems, including the selection, implementation and effective use of any technology solutions
  • Consult and manage external tax advisors when necessary, including the communication of clear instruction and ongoing guidance, and overall engagement governance

Required Qualifications

 
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience working in a corporate tax environment or relatable experience
  • Preference for the CPA designation
  • Leadership and negotiation experience is an asset
  • Completion of the CPA In-Depth tax course

  • Demonstrated capability to navigate the provisions of the Canadian Income Tax Act and supporting jurisprudence to come to coherent and supportable tax positions
  • Understanding of general legal and business concepts with superior process and project management skills, developing and adhering to internal systems and control structures
  • Advanced knowledge of IAS 12 and other GAAP measures
  • Exceptionally strong business and professional judgement, with the ability to think and act strategically and with foresight, as well as a strong continuous improvement mindset
  • Proven ability to establish and effectively develop strong, positive relationships, using non-authoritative leadership with the ability to influence others in adversarial situations
