Reporting to the manager, development, you will work directly with project owners and asset teams to understand, review and document business problems and opportunities and develop creative and strategic approaches to solving them.


  • Lead the work to identify and evaluate alternatives to mitigate business risks and to address complex business issues and opportunities to realize maximum value for Suncor; including build and non-build options
  • Define the concept, identifying the scopes and progress design for projects where skillset required is broader than unit-specific expertise and engages other functional areas as impact may extend to multiple area cross functional teams (ACFT)
  • Integrate the work across all elements for stages one, two and five in accordance with Suncor asset development and execution model (ADEM)
  • Assess and quantify the impact of proposed changes throughout the lifecycle to support the final approval while validating benefits and risks of investments
  • Prepare activity reports (AR) and authorization for expenditure (AFE)
  • Provide portfolio oversight during the idea generation phase to ensure alignment with corporate and business unit strategy
  • Facilitate information gathering, analyze options, socialize concepts, garner support for selected solutions and assess the intended business benefits of the project
  • Apply divergent and convergent thinking to screen options and identify the best solutions that align to the business strategy
  • Obtain project partner alignment and prepare decision support packages (DSPs) to be presented to the gatekeeper at the gate  
  • Support the regional planning and optimization (RP&O) group in the completion of the long range capital plan and annual capital budget

Required Qualifications

 
  • Six or more years of experience working in the oil and gas or similar industry preferably in Mining or Tailings projects
  • Technical expertise in one or more engineering disciplines and familiarity with the interrelationship of all engineering disciplines
  • Experience leading or coordinating ACFT
  • Bachelor degree in engineering
  • Project management professional designation (PMP) is an asset; engineering degree professional designation (APEGA) preferred

  • Detailed understanding of the operational excellence management system (OEMS) element 8.0 and ADEM
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with continuous process improvement mindset
  • Excellent interpersonal and engagement skills, both verbal and written with proven communication and facilitation skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders at various levels across the organization, manage conflict and have strong decision-making processes to optimize outcomes is key to success in this role
  • Ability to influence and negotiate with project partners and challenge constraints and assumptions
  • Coaching and mentoring junior to mid-level individual contributors

Working Conditions

  • Calgary based position with regular travel to sites as required
