Job Overview

Are you passionate about becoming a key resource, working in a small supply and trading team based in London? Reporting to the Director, International Trading, you will be responsible for supporting the traders in providing near-term market intelligence and fundamental analysis across both local and global regions to promote trading strategies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Work closely with the London traders to design, develop and maintain models to understand regional balances, arbitrage models and supply / demand analysis in support of trade strategies by identifying market and pricing trends
  • Assist in the development of the team’s short term outlook, including global and regional changes in production rate and refinery activity
  • Track crude loading programs, update shipping info, tracking which cargoes go where, STS info and highlighting relevant fixture info daily
  • Track global refining cracks and margins, crude and products markets
  • Forecast European refinery operations: refinery runs (crude and feedstock), refinery maintenance and expansion, refinery optimization and production
  • Assess the impacts of significant changes in the market (such as refinery outages, field maintenance, IMO 2020, Iran sanctions) and be able to translate that into medium / longer term views to support Suncor’s strategy
  • “Super-user” of the tools and reports that Suncor has access to in support of its trading activities (e.g. Reuters Eikon, Vessel tracking data) and summarize the data and use it to better understand changes in crude flows
  • Capture the synergies between the short and long term fundamentals teams in Houston and Calgary and close any gaps in our work
  • Utilize advanced modeling techniques to determine the relationship between energy market variables
  • Drive useful and insightful analysis across trading books, highlighting position risk and supplying to trading strategy
  • Participate in special projects and strategic studies
  • Support trading management on ad-hoc business issues and projects
  • Build strong networks across Suncor and the industry to improve the quality and timeliness of intelligence to best support Suncor’s objectives

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • 7-10 years of experience in a commodity-based trading environment
  • Professional analytical background
  • University degree in business, finance, accounting, engineering or a related field

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Exceptional understanding of modeling, specifically using Python and/or VBA, and Matlab
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel; knowledge of data mining, modeling and data analysis using Excel and VBA is an asset
  • Preference for familiarity and experience with CTRMs, particularly Commodity XL
  • Understanding of commodities price theory, including the fundamental drivers for supply, demand, trade flows and prices and their mutual interaction
  • Basic knowledge of physical crude oil markets and logistics as well as an understanding of refinery processes and economics is preferred
  • Knowledge of financial and physical trading instruments such as forwards, futures, swaps and options is an asset
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with a proven ability to quickly build and maintain positive, effective relationships across all levels in an organization
  • Self-starter who does not require much direction; strong continuous improvement mindset
  • Proven thoroughness and accuracy through attentiveness to detail
