Reporting to the Process Controls Supervisor, the Control Systems Specialist will provide process control network systems expertise and support. This role will be responsible for the day to day network support and planning, coordinating, and executing selected maintenance and project activities at the refinery. Support activities may include: configuring and maintaining servers, workstations (physical and virtual), switches and Ethernet network infrastructure (wired and wireless), administrating Active Directory, and using selected applications to proactively monitor and troubleshoot performance. Advanced knowledge of control systems and their maintenance will be required, and training provided where necessary. The role will participate in applicable support networks in the business (such as the Refining Process Control Network and the Refining Cybersecurity Network) to align on best practices.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Support Process Control Network to meet security and compliance standards.

  • Planning and managing hardware and software refresh.

  • Planning and managing potentially disruptive activities in the production Process Control Network environment.

  • Planning and managing corporate required cybersecurity related activities in the Process Control Network environment.

  • Resolving service delivery issues for support of control systems infrastructure.

  • Optimizing Process Control Systems service delivery by improving reliability, efficiency, quality and cost effectiveness of defined components of services while following required engineering standards and safety practices.

  • Maintaining documentation of supported systems.

  • Seeking, recommending, and delivering cost effective value-add opportunities.

  • Assisting with the business’s budget development.

  • Coordinating resources and suppliers to complete projects and work requests.

Required Qualifications

 
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

  • 3 or more years of experience in an applicable Process Control Network discipline

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proven verbal and written communication skills for direct customer interaction

  • Proven ability to master and apply advanced and specialized technical training

  • Proven ability to work well with business, and local and remote Process Control resources

  • Proven ability to deliver on commitments

  • Experience with MOC processes

  • Must be willing and able, with or without accommodation, to perform/comply with the following:

  • Work overtime (including weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts)

  • Lift 30 pounds

  • Work in enclosed spaces such as tanks and silos

  • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines

  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases

  • Wear Nomex fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toed shoes, ear/eye protection)

  • Maintain face daily so that a respirator face mask can seal properly

  • Be on call as needed

  • Perform firefighting and/or hazmat duties, if needed

  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions

  • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat

  • Lift, climb, walk, kneel, and squat on a regular basis

  • Read technical procedures, materials and drawings in English

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in MIS, Computer Science, or Engineering

  • Strong leadership skills

  • 5 or more years of experience in Process Control Network discipline

  • Experience with domain administration

  • Experience with Cisco switches

  • Ability to influence individuals and groups

  • Ability to create an environment of inclusiveness and foster communication

The San Francisco Refinery consists of two facilities linked by a 200-mile pipeline. The Santa Maria facility is located in Arroyo Grande, California, 200 miles south of San Francisco, California, while the Rodeo facility is in the San Francisco Bay Area. Semi-refined liquid products from the Santa Maria facility are shipped by pipeline to the Rodeo facility for upgrading into finished petroleum products. Facilities include crude distillation, naphtha reforming, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units, as well as a calciner. The San Francisco Refinery processes a mixture of heavy, high sulfur and light sweet crude oil. It receives California crude oil by pipeline, and both domestic and foreign crude oil by tanker. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. It also produces CARB-grade gasoline. Other products include petroleum coke. The majority of the refined products are distributed to California by pipeline and barge. Additional refined products are also exported to Latin America by waterborne cargo.
