Job Description Back

Job ID 67906BR

Shell is seeking a Control Systems Engineer for our Martinez refinery location.

The Control System Engineer (CSE) is deployed by the CSE Department to support the control systems within a production department.  These departments may be focused on process infrastructure such as steam, water, air, power, product movement and storage, or on refining processes such as distillation, reaction, separation or blending.  CSEs will support both Honeywell control systems and Honeywell or Triconex safety logic solver applications.  Other electronic controllers are also used such as GE, Allen-Bradley, Modicon and others.  CSE technical challenges include support of equipment spread over a large geographical area, a mixture of equipment ranging from the oldest to the very newest technologies, real-time closed loop control, supervisory control, advanced blending and safety instrumented functions.

Success in this role is maintaining excellent process safety performance, reducing control and instrument reliability incidents, enforcing engineering standards, improving standardization of equipment and configuration while planning for and reducing obsolescence, and responding to, anticipating and meeting Operations needs.  Must thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment and use prioritization skills to balance urgent short term work with crucial long term objectives.

The Martinez refinery comprises six production departments including four process units, a Utilities unit and a Logistics unit.  The CSE is responsible to assure the reliability and integrity of the control and safety systems in one of these areas.  To this end, the CSE will coordinate with Operations, Engineering Maintenance and Technical groups to identify, prioritize and resolve system level issues and initiate or implement projects to maintain or improve margin performance, comply with internal and external requirements and provide technical assurance for existing and new control systems and components.

The CSE reports to the Control Systems Engineering Supervisor, then through the Control Systems Engineering Manager to the site Technology Manager.  As a deployed unit engineer, the CSE also takes direction from the Production Unit Manager and works closely with peers including other unit CSEs, the process engineer, the instrument inspector, and engineers from other technical disciplines.
