The Control System Engineer/ Technologist will be accountable for the integrity, reliability, and operability of all instrumentation and control designs within their assigned area of the site. The Control System Engineer/Technologist will advise the Technical, Maintenance & Production departments on instrumentation matters to ensure safe, reliable & efficient operation and compliance to provincial & federal codes & standards.

  • Lead engineering activities covering all key areas of instrumentation technology, including, flow metering, level, temperature, pressure measurement, valves, and analyzers.
  • Identify unit performance improvement opportunities and reliability risks, and work with the Area team to determine and implement cost-effective solutions.
  • Understand the process safety requirements for the production Area and collaborate with IPF specialists in designing or modifying Safety Instrumented Functions.
  • Conduct or lead failure analysis and causal investigation of instrumentation failures or incidents. Develop solutions to prevent future occurrence.
  • Network with other sites and company personnel to maintain a high quality of work and proactively prevent problems related to instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with TSE’s and Instrumentation specialists to lead and champion instrumentation equipment upgrades and obsolescence planning in the assigned production area.
  • Manage the turnaround instrumentation plan and work list for assigned areas. Provide active support for the implementation of instrumentation scope during turnarounds.

  • The successful candidates will be assigned a plant area to support, as part of a multi-discipline area team and will represent the PACO discipline on this team. The ability to deal with multiple issues and to work collaboratively with a high sense of ownership is required.
  • A broad skillset is required for this position and it is recognized that candidates will be stronger in certain areas than others. Flexibility and willingness to learn new skills are required since there will be an expectation to expand competency into the broader Instrumentation discipline.
  • Shift coverage may be required for special events such as unit upsets, start-ups, shutdowns, and Turnarounds.
  • Off Hours call out support when required.
Shell Scotford is an industrial site located near Fort Saskatchewan (Northeast of Edmonton), Alberta in Canada. Scotford consists of the following operating units: Chemicals, Refinery, Upgrader, and Upgrader Expansion 1 Operations. The Scotford Upgrader receives its feed from the Albian Sands Mine located in northern Alberta and produces synthetic Crude and Vacuum Gas Oil products.Some of these products are sent to the Scotford refinery which produces refined petroleum products such as gasoline, jet fuel, diesel and Benzene.The Scotford Chemicals facility receives its feedstock from the Scotford refinery as well as from other sources in Alberta and North America.The Chemicals facility produces primarily Mono Ethylene Glycol and Styrene Monomer which is sold throughout North America.The Scotford Site employs 1500+ staff and contractors.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional qualifications: Instrumentation Engineering Technologist or Electrical Engineering degree
  • Eligible for Professional status from APEGGA as a P.Eng. or P.L.(Eng).
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant industrial experience in the areas of design and engineering in the instrumentation discipline; preferably in a refinery/upgrader or large industrial facility
  • Strong background in instrumentation, analyzers, and valving for industrial/petrochemical applications.
  • Good knowledge of safe work practices and engineering obligations in an industrial environment including change management (MOC) work processes and procedures.
  • Familiarity with maintenance practices, project scope development, turn-around and long term planning is an asset
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve instrumentation and control problems with maintenance and operations.
  • Utilization of problem solving techniques to resolve design & engineering issues.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline team environment consisting of Engineering, Projects, Maintenance, and Operations.
  • Organized, thorough, and professional.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with peers and clients.
  • Ability to articulate and defend a case for change or improvement.
