As the contact engineer, you will be responsible for continuous on-site technical support, providing feedback to operations, sustaining projects/major projects, and technology development as required. You will also support expense projects and process changes.

  • Monitor key performance indicators daily and providing support to meet operational specifications and targets
  • Identify problems and recommend potential solutions; communicate required corrective actions and perform effective follow up
  • Provide technical support and recommendations to return the plant to normal operation
  • Perform investigations, root cause analysis, and calculations to identify required process conditions including flow, pressure, temperature, and composition
  • Perform calculations to identify production loss, emissions, spills, and required chemicals
  • Compare existing plant operating conditions against design conditions identifying the cause of deviations and areas of improvement
  • Perform required studies and calculations, and develop procedures required for plant and equipment optimization
  • Support continuous improvement efforts through stewardship of the management of change process among the process engineering discipline
  • Oversee development and maintenance of living process engineering documents and tools, such as process flow diagrams (PFD), specifications and targets, safe operating limits
  • Identify plant bottlenecks and forecast equipment performance and provide solutions to meet production goals

Required Qualifications

  • Five or more years of oil and gas experience; preference for refinery, upgrading, gas plant, petro-chemical experience
  • Operational experience in SAGD is an asset
  • Prior exposure to facilitated HAZOP and risk assessment studies; facilitation experience is a definite asset
  • Bachelor degree in chemical or process engineering; registered as a professional engineer in Alberta
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record  

  • Exceptional knowledge of heat and material balance development, operation of fired heater, oil separation, and water treatment equipment, and of HYSYS and computer-based hydraulic packages are an asset
  • Familiarity with process related documentation
  • Deep understanding of the business drivers for thermal heavy oil operations is considered an asset
  • Ability to perform fluid hydraulic calculations
  • Highly motivated problem solver with strong communication and interpersonal skills

Working Conditions

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive
  • This position will be a camp-based position at our Firebag site
  • The shift schedule will be 4 days on/ 3 days off or 7 days on/ 7 days off
