Job Overview
Reporting to the manager, environmental, health and safety (EHS), you will work with a small team of highly dedicated EHS professionals to support operations and maintenance at the Firebag SAGD In-Situ facility. This role involves engaging directly with front-line staff on day-to-day EHS initiatives, as well as supporting management in interpretation of these requirements. This is an exciting chance for you to influence the safety culture at our facility and our journey to zero injuries.

Key Accountabilities

  • Participate with front-line workers in safety meetings, workplace observations and inspections
  • Interpret and provide recommendations to the business on EHS standards and regulatory requirements
  • Build risk management activities including field level hazard assessment auditing, risk assessment participation or facilitation
  • Conduct incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA), as well as coach and mentor incident owners in incident management
  • Collaborate on EHS components of contractor management, including review of safe work plans, job hazard analysis and contractor auditing
  • Work with leaders to support the design of facility EHS programs, procedures, safe work practices, orientations, campaigns, etc.
  • Engage in emergency management exercises and interact with external EHS regulators as required
  • Build, distribute and present safety communications including alerts, and safety moments

Required Qualifications
Experience and Education:

  • Minimum of five years of industry experience in EHS roles in upstream or related sectors (or a combination of operational and EHS experience)
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in occupational health and safety or equivalent training
  • Preference for certification in a registered EHS professional organization (Canadian Registered Safety Professional; Registered Construction Safety Officer or Construction Safety Officer; Certified EHS Consultant)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Operational experience with, or superior knowledge of, oil and gas activities and equipment
  • Knowledge of Alberta legislation including an understanding of key areas of critical risk - confined spaces, working at heights, control of hazardous energy
  • Knowledge of incident Management software such as SAP or Enablon
  • Incident Investigation and RCA (e.g., TapRoot) with moderate to advanced experience conducting investigations
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office: Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Working Conditions

  • Role is a Monday to Thursday (40 hours per week) fly-in, fly-out (FIFO)
  • Firebag is serviced directly from Edmonton and Calgary and accommodation is provided at Firebag Village
