2018 China Trader Development Programme (TDP)

Shell - Beijing-China Central PlaceTower

Job Description Back

Job ID 70239BR

Shell China are looking for graduates who’ve gained some valuable commercial experience to join our Shell China Trader Development Programme (TDP), where you'll train on an international placement before returning to China on completion of the programme. The TDP could equip you to work in one of the world’s most entrepreneurial and exhilarating professional environments.
Why choose Shell?
Our traders can express their individual intellect and commercial flair but with the backing of a business that’s been globally successful for more than 100 years. Through trading natural gas, power, crude oil, oil products, environmental products and freight – equivalent to around 13 million barrels of oil every single day – our global trading teams have the power to shape Shell’s market position and make a huge impact on our profitability.
Today’s Talent. Tomorrow’s Traders

The Shell TDP is a dynamic, individualised programme like no other. Typically, it takes 2-3 years to complete but no two trainees follow the same route. We’ll assess your strengths, weaknesses, experience and aptitude and then tailor a rotational programme that allows you to develop the competences you need –both to meet the requirements of the trading desk you’re assigned to today and to be an accomplished, all-round trader tomorrow.
You’ll be working alongside, and learning from, some of the best traders in the business; tapping into a wealth of insight and experience. Areas of trading you could be involved in include: crude oil, oil products, natural gas, power and environmental products.
There are regular performance reviews and assessments to review your progress and support your development with the right level of coaching and feedback. Along the way, you’ll sharpen your ability to analyse markets and manage risk and learn how to successfully negotiate and structure deals – everything you'll need to apply for a permanent trading role with us on completion.
We’re recruiting for starting roles in the following locations:

  • London, UK
  • Houston, USA
  • Singapore
This isn’t an opportunity for Chinese nationals with ambitions to build a career overseas, it’s part of the deal that, at the end of the TDP, you return to China and start working for Shell there. However, this is a fantastic opportunity to gain some international work experience to then take home.
Armed with a variety of new skills, you will help us to shape a new approach to trading in China. You will be setting the pace and changing the face of energy trading in one of our most dynamic and demanding markets – clearly, there is huge scope for you to make an impact.
What makes a great trader?
Whilst energy trading is a hugely dynamic and commercially challenging environment, there’s no room here for big egos or uncompromising characters.
Yes, you’ll always be looking to outmanoeuvre the market and outpace the competition, but the decisions you make will be considered and the risks you take calculated. You'll follow the letter and the spirit of the relevant legislation. You'll work with honesty, integrity and respect.
We value perceptive people with versatile interpersonal skills. Team dynamics constantly change, so it's vital you can adapt your communication style to suit the diverse range of people you’re seeking to persuade and influence. It's important you're fluent in English, as well as the language of the market you’re operating in – e.g. Arabic, Chinese.
If there’s one thing that sets apart our very best traders, it’s their commerciality. They’re numerate, analytical and highly enterprising with the curiosity to keep seeking out new opportunities to make money. We look for men and women who can digest wide amounts of information from different sources and synthesise it to form trading strategies – people who move easily between a micro and macro view.
You don’t need trading experience. Your degree is probably in economics, finance, marketing, engineering or a similarly numerate discipline. You probably work in finance, accountancy, banking, FinTech, in a trading environment or perhaps in a refinery. We’re also keen to hear from people currently in an entrepreneurial, tech or start-up setting or with energy experience. That said, we’re open-minded. If you have the personal qualities we’re looking for and natural numeracy, don’t be deterred from talking to us.
Our values

  • Our shared values of honesty, integrity, and respect aren't simply a strapline. They're part of everything we do.
  • As an equal opportunities employer, we place the highest value on the diversity of our people and our inclusive approach.
  • Join us and you’ll belong to a world where you can take pride in your achievements and propel your career with global opportunities.
Women’s perspective

  • We care deeply about fostering a truly diverse workplace. We believe in doing everything we possibly can to make this a flexible and supportive place for women to work. In 2016, we retained our place in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women.
  • We can help with things like global, transparent pay policies, backed by a leadership team that's fully supportive of our diversity ambitions.
  • We can help you cultivate your career through our Women's Career Development programme and an extensive Women's Network.
People with an impairment

  • We're all about top talent. End of story. We encourage anyone facing an impairment to see Shell as a place where you're fully supported to develop your career. It's as simple as that.
  • If you'd like to apply, just let us know about your circumstances. We can support you through the process: from application, to interview, to your first day of a rewarding career with us.
